Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

The short version: your watch history belongs to you. We don't sell your personal data, we don't use it for ad targeting, and there are no ads in Mothlit. We collect the data needed to run your account, sync your library, make the social features work, keep the service secure, and improve the product during beta.

Mothlit is in active beta. Some privacy controls, export tools, deletion flows, and account settings may change as the app is finished. This policy is written in plain English for beta users and should be reviewed by a lawyer before a full public launch.

Information we collect

  • Account details: your email address, display name, username, avatar, password hash, session tokens, and authentication details from Google or Apple if you choose to sign in that way.
  • Your library and activity: shows and movies you track, watched episodes, rewatch counts, watch status, ratings, favorites, lists, comments, reviews, reactions, group posts, follows, followers, and other social activity.
  • Imports: data you choose to import from another service, such as a TV Time export. We use imported data to rebuild your Mothlit library and watch history.
  • Preferences: settings such as language, theme, profile visibility, notification choices, content preferences, and other account controls.
  • Support and feedback: messages you send to us by email, Discord, bug reports, surveys, or similar support channels.
  • Technical and security data: IP address, device and browser information, app version, request logs, error logs, abuse-prevention signals, and similar data needed to operate, debug, and secure the service.
  • Cookies and local storage: browser storage, session cookies, and similar technologies used for login, security, preferences, and basic product functionality.

How we use information

  • Run your account, keep you signed in, and provide the app's core tracking features.
  • Sync your library, Watch Next queue, ratings, stats, badges, recommendations, lists, comments, groups, and other social features.
  • Import data you explicitly provide and match it to content metadata.
  • Localize titles and metadata to your chosen language where supported.
  • Prevent abuse, investigate bugs, protect accounts, and keep the service reliable.
  • Respond to support requests, bug reports, and beta feedback.
  • Send essential service messages, such as security notices, account updates, and important policy changes. If optional marketing or product emails are added later, they will include a way to opt out.

What we do not do

  • We don't sell your personal data to anyone.
  • We don't run ads or share your personal data with ad networks.
  • We don't build hidden profiles of you to trade. Recommendations run on a transparent, on-account genre score.
  • We don't intentionally collect sensitive personal information such as government ID numbers, precise location, financial account details, or health information.

Visibility and social features

Your private library is not automatically public. If you use social features, the information you post or choose to make visible may be seen by other people. This can include your profile, display name, avatar, comments, reviews, ratings, lists, favorites, followers, following, group activity, and public watch-related activity depending on your settings and the feature you use.

If you delete content or your account, copies may remain for a limited time in backups, logs, cached pages, moderation records, or places where another user has already seen or interacted with it. We work to remove or anonymize personal data when deletion is requested, unless we need to keep limited records for security, legal, or abuse-prevention reasons.

When we share information

  • Service providers: companies that help us host, store, secure, debug, authenticate, email, analyze, or operate Mothlit. They may process data only to provide services to us.
  • Content and metadata providers: services such as TheTVDB that help us resolve titles, posters, episode data, translations, and related metadata. Mothlit stores your personal watch state separately from third-party content metadata.
  • Login providers: Google or Apple if you choose to sign in with those accounts. Their own privacy policies also apply.
  • Community and support channels: if you join our Discord or contact us through another third-party service, that service receives the information you provide there under its own terms and privacy policy.
  • Legal, safety, and protection: if required by law, court order, or valid legal process, or if needed to protect users, Mothlit, the public, or the security and integrity of the service.
  • Business changes: if Mothlit is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy or notice of any material change.

Your choices and controls

  • Profile visibility — choose which social information is visible where the app provides controls.
  • Edit or delete individual items such as ratings, lists, comments, reviews, and tracked titles where supported.
  • Export your library when export tools are available, or contact us if you need help during beta.
  • Delete your account from settings when available, or contact us to request deletion during beta.
  • Cookies and storage: use browser or device settings to clear local storage, cookies, and cached app data. Clearing storage may sign you out or reset local preferences.
  • Regional rights: depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, delete, restrict, or object to certain processing of your personal information. Contact us to make a request.

Retention

We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide Mothlit, maintain your account, resolve disputes, enforce our terms, prevent abuse, comply with legal obligations, and maintain backups. Some technical logs and security records are kept for a shorter period unless they are needed to investigate abuse, fraud, or reliability issues.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including hashed passwords, access controls, and secure infrastructure practices. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so you should use a strong password and tell us immediately if you believe your account has been compromised.

Children

Mothlit is not intended for children under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has provided personal information to Mothlit, contact us so we can review and remove it where appropriate.

International use

Mothlit and its providers may process information in countries other than where you live. Those countries may have data-protection laws that differ from your local laws. When legally required, we will use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Mothlit changes. If the changes are material, we will update the date above and provide reasonable notice, such as an in-app notice, website notice, or email where appropriate. Continuing to use Mothlit after an update means the updated policy applies.
